Collages vary in shape, size and motif by utilizing a variety of found objects as bases, for example the tryptich titled, “ 3 Blind Mice,” were created on vintage fiber drum cases found in a vacant lot. The many hundreds of images, letters and text undergo rigorous and time consuming processing from their point of origin and acquisition to ending up in a finished piece. Scissors or cutting devices are rarely used, instead a technique I’ve dubbed, “Tear o’ Wrist,” is applied by hand tearing all the materials and adhering them to the chosen base.
While there is planned intent, the process is intuitive and improvisational, allowing for unexpected and interesting elements to manifest. Tableau and allegory are employed to deepen exploration of themes and motifs, while the black outlines help define and bring movement to the many individual pieces and sections.
The pieces are generally multi-thematic and phantasmagorical, with layers of meaning encoded into them that invite many questions and interpretations. The titles themselves usually incorporate plays on words and are written in a personal code that is considered an integral component of the work.
