The Galaxy series is based on images of the many nebulae, pulsars and galaxies depicted in photos from sources such as the Hubble Telescope. Knowing that those images are heavily processed and have been assigned color values for scientific and aesthetic purposes, this empowers me to do the same by changing color values for effect, as well as creating close up views of sections I find interesting. This is in part influenced by my interest in expressing the constant state of change in all things.
My renditions have features that can be seen literally in Hubble Images and others that are my creative choices. For example, I tend to express stars in clear and colored glass, while also shifting or enhancing certain features to achieve my intent.
I have been using salvaged wooden window frames easily collected in places like Asheville. I have used doors, picture frames, commercial glass and a variety of surfaces, including glass shelving and table tops. If it can be repurposed, has structural integrity and aesthetics, then it is considered a viable base.
For pieces that are better suited to light reflectivity, such as Yage’ Mandalas and Crosses, I use mostly salvaged and prepared wood and cementitious boards or repurposed cabinet doors, table tops, shelving or any random panels that will serve as a base.
